Claude Desktop — Native Claude App for Mac and Windows

Claude Desktop is Anthropic's native desktop app for macOS and Windows. It brings three things the browser doesn't: seamless MCP server integration, Computer Use (Claude can operate your system), and a clean UI for longer work sessions. The app is free but needs a Claude subscription to use. Here's the complete entry point.

Installation in 3 minutes

Go to claude.ai/download, download the app for your OS (.dmg for Mac, .exe for Windows), install like any other app. On first launch, log in with your Claude account. On Mac it lands in the dock and can be launched via Cmd+Space; on Windows via Start menu or global shortcut. A Pro or Max subscription is detected automatically, free accounts have the same limits as the browser. The app starts in seconds and uses noticeably less memory than a browser tab.

MCP servers: the desktop app's biggest advantage

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is the standard for connecting Claude to external tools and data sources: your file system, databases, Slack, GitHub, calendar, Obsidian, Zotero — anything with an MCP server. In Claude Desktop you configure MCP servers via a JSON file (claude_desktop_config.json) and Claude has instant access. Browser and mobile apps can't do this. Anyone who wants to use Claude productively can't avoid Claude Desktop — or use Claude Code in the terminal directly, which also supports MCP.

Computer Use: Claude operates your computer

Computer Use is the experimental feature where Claude interprets screenshots of your screen and performs mouse/keyboard actions. Practical example: "Book me a flight from Berlin to Munich on May 20" — Claude opens the browser, navigates the booking page, fills forms. The feature is powerful but still beta, slow and error-prone. Productively usable for browser automation (scraping, forms), not for critical transactions. Activatable only for Pro and Max users.

Projects and local files

In the desktop app Projects are easier to manage than in the browser: you can drag-and-drop entire folders, link projects to local files, and work directly on your real projects through the filesystem MCP server without copy-paste. For research workflows this is a quantum leap: Claude can access your literature database while writing an article, pull quotes, check cross-references. Files don't leave your machine, only individual file contents are loaded into context on demand — controllable via MCP permissions.

Claude Desktop vs. Browser vs. Mobile

Browser: available everywhere, no install, but no MCP integration, no Computer Use, less comfort. Mobile (iOS/Android): good on the go, voice input, quick questions; no MCP integration. Desktop: the power-user interface with MCP, Computer Use, local file access and global shortcut. Anyone working intensively with Claude has Desktop installed. For occasional questions, browser or mobile is enough.

FAQ

Is there Claude Desktop for Linux?

Officially no, Anthropic only offers Mac and Windows. There are community wrappers for Linux but no official support. Linux users in practice work with Claude Code in the terminal — which is the more productive choice anyway.

Is Claude Desktop free?

The app itself yes. But you need a Claude subscription (Free, Pro or Max) to connect it to an account. MCP and Projects work on Free tier, Computer Use only from Pro.

How do I install an MCP server?

Official path: Claude Desktop Settings → Developer → Edit Config. The claude_desktop_config.json file opens. Add a JSON block for each server (e.g. filesystem, github, slack). Restart Claude Desktop after. Detailed intro in our AI Beginner course.

GDPR compliant?

The app sends prompts and responses to Anthropic servers. For consumer accounts without a DPA, this is problematic for personal data in B2B contexts. For GDPR-compliant work you need Claude for Work (Team or Enterprise) with DPA.

Does Claude Desktop work offline?

No. The model runs on Anthropic servers, you always need internet. For offline use you'd run local open-source models (e.g. via Ollama) — with significant quality tradeoffs.
